was born 07 Aug 1773 in Macungie,PA, the son of Cornelius Hughes, a Private on 15 Mar 1776 in Col.Samuel Miles Rifle Regt. and participated in the first
Battle of Long Island, where Col. Miles was captured on Jamacia Road, Cornelius was also at Fort Island,
Harlem, and Perth Ambroy. His son, Daniel, came to Sparta,NY about the same time as did the Kiehle's in 1817.
He built the old Stone House where his great-grandson, Claude Hughes, was living in 1932. Daniel
owned a large tract of land and left property to his three sons in his will. His estate
papers on file in the Surrogate's Court at Geneseo,NY give a list of his (then)
survivors. There were three sons and seven daughters and his widow whom he left
ample provisions for as long as "she remain his widow". Nine of his ten children
came to the "Story Road and Vicinity" (now Springwater-Sparta Town line Road).
His daughter Catherine who married Conrad Kress, remained in Macungie,PA.
Daniel died 26 Aug 1845 in Sparta and is buried at the Kiehle(Old Dutch) Cemetery. His and his wife's markers are
