Abraham ZERFASS, was born 27 Nov 1772 in
Whitehall,Northampton Co.,PA, the son of Adam Zerfass, who was in the French
and Indian War and a Captain in the Revolutionary War
and participated in the battles of Germantown and Brandywine. Even after
the close of the war Adam was engaged in Indian fighting on the frontier.
His son Abraham married Hannah Knause, daughter of Gottfried Knause, also
a Captain in the
Revolution from Pennsylvania. Abraham and his wife came to the Dansville
area about 1813
where he was engaged in farming. They had twelve children. His eldest
daughter, Elizabeth, married Henry Hartman, a son of Harmon Hartman, a
Revolutionary War soldier and early settler of Dansville, who died in 1811.
Abraham was guadian of a few of the younger
children of the said Harmon Hartman.
Abraham lived with his family in Dansville where the name of Zerfass Road
crosses the valley in the northern section of the town. Abraham died 17 Dec
1837 in Dansville. His wife and eldest daughter died within 2 days of each other in
February 1845, of malignant erysipelas. The Zerfass' are buried at the Greenmount
Cemetery next to Hartman's.
